My name is Don Rieck. I’m 78 years old, a retired publishing sales and marketing executive experiencing an artistic re-birth after 45 years doing other things. Right before my 45 year hiatus I was a graduate student and a TA of drawing at UW Madison, then after moving to Chicago, my home town, I started working as an artist full time while teaching drawing at Loyola University and local community colleges, all of this in the early 70's. I moved to NYC to pursue my career on a bigger stage. I needed a job so I took one at a bookstore. I got started by using my visual skills to re-merchandise those stores and subsequently moved to the publishing side in sales and marketing. It was a very engaging and challenging job so I stuck with it. When I retired in early 2015 I was looking around for something to do so starting in late 2017 I audited a couple of Art classes at MSU (Montclair State University. It was just what I needed and it allowed me to brush away the cobwebs. With the help of the young adjunct professors there as guides I was reintroduced to the living contemporary world of art and was able to start making viable artistic and creative pieces again. I was working primarily in pencil when I stopped working in the mid 70’s so I started there. I have moved on to Charcoal and Oil Pastel as well and feel renewed and revived and ready to start new things. I work on my dinning room table so large Oil and Acrylic is out for now. But who knows?
