Hema Bharadwaj
For the better part of a decade, artist Hema Bharadwaj was in a parenting cocoon and kept art alive in sketchbooks. Working with watercolors, oils and clay she uses the grooves of motherhood, menopause, spiritual matters, pantries of bottled emotions, crumpled cotton saris, bodily experiences, cooking and eating feelings to create an immersive experience for herself and the viewer. She hopes her work will hang in domestic spaces where one might pause while balancing a laundry basket, and take in a tiny detail or trace a ceramic groove with a finger and be transported and re-energized.
Hema has an MFA from School of Visual Arts, NYC and is a teaching artist with the Arts Council of Princeton and also teaches privately from her home Studio. While she carries India in her very bones and has lived in many countries, New Jersey is where she shares studio and home with her husband, grown children and gracefully aging dog.
